Camping in Scotland, Inverewe Gardens a Motorhome and Caravan Campsite at Poolewe
Inverewe Gardens Poolewe
The Camping and Caravanning Club's most northerly site, on Loch Ewe by the famous gardens.
- Just half a mile from the site is the beautiful Inverewe Garden created in the 19th-century by Osgood MacKenzie. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream allows sub-tropical flowers to flourish. There is a gift shop and a restaurant here.
- At Cove there is a plaque commemorating the Russian convoys which sailed from Loch Ewe during World War Two.
- Take a boat trip into the bay from Gairloch for a chance to see a harbour porpoise or a minke whale. You can also visit the Marine Life Centre. Catch a bus to Gairloch on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from the bus stop outside the site. A Thursday bus will take you north to the 8th-century fishing port, Ullapool.
- There is a lovely sandy beach at Gairloch to the south. Gruinard, a tiny crofting settlement, is to the north. Further south along the coast is the Countryside Centre at Torridon. Above Loch Torridon you can climb the seven tops of Liathach and see Highland cattle and red deer.
- Poolewe village is a five-minute walk from the site. It has a mini supermarket, children's play area, coffee shop and indoor swimming pool. The hotel serves meals. The River Ewe flows into the loch.
- You can fish (no charge) from the loch side or take a boat from Gairloch. If you have your own boat, there is a slipway 100 meters from the site entrance.
- The roads in this area are quiet and good for cyclists. Walkers will enjoy the hills of Wester Ross or the gentler walks along the coast. Birdwatchers may spot a great northern diver or a skua.
One members' opinion about the campsite: "We keep coming back to Inverewe; the scenery, the walks, the peacefulness - it's intoxicating."

Did you know?
The site was formerly a Royal Engineers' base where transport from all over the Wester Ross area was serviced.
The ideal way to see this area is to hire a motorhome.
By doing so you can explore at your leisure and 'wild camp' if you like or find a wonderful campsite such as this one.If you wish to do this, there are many motorhome hire companies throughout the UK who can supply campervans, motorhomes or even large american RVs.
Typically their motorhomes are less than 12 months old and are easy to drive.
One company with the best range of vehicles is Motorhomes Direct in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.
Motorhomes Direct can deliver motorhomes to any destination you wish. They do this ingeniously by using one driver, but towing a SmartCar behind the motorhome. Once they reach their destination, they simply unhook the SmartCar and then drive that back to the depot in Stoke-on-Trent.
You can get more information from their web site, http://www.motorhomesdirect.co.uk
